Translation, localization and internationalization.

My approach to translation and localization draws from training as a linguist and from my fluency in multiple languages. Having Spanish as my native language, along with my native fluency in English, allow me to translate in the most authentic manner. My goal with all translation is for the message to be conveyed in exactly the same style and register as the source language. This requires not only expert linguistic skills, but also cultural awareness of both the source and the target languages.
At Super-Learners International Language School, I translated didactic texts, television and movie scripts, and engaged in voiceover work in Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Italian. My magnum opus at this language institute that served renown figures in the Hollywood entertainment industry was the translation of all he documentation at the UCLA Rape Treatment Center from English to Spanish. The challenge with with this sensitive material was to come up with a translation that was culturally appropriate for Latin American immigrants living in Southern California. The task required to interview the community to whom this documentation was directed. I set out to do field interviews with the goal of finding the terminology the community was most comfortable with. Often, this meant that a word or expression was considered to be Spanglish or non-standard Spanish – nonetheless, it was what this community used. Thus, it was the community that guided my translation in order to provide with authentic language they would be able to identify with.
At Wikia, I translate corporate blogs and editorial work, as well localize video and audio, while also engaging in voiceover work. I work in conjunction with the Localization Manager to coordinate translation projects involving the localization of Wikia's mobile apps.
Another facet of my translation and localization work has been interactive video. Among the captioning work I have performed is a video by Mexican singer Gloria Trevi, whose song with my English translation and captions has over 8.6 million views on my YouTube channel. The video is authorized by music label as an authentic translation of Gloria's work.
